"Let's get ready to rumble!"
You are buying a pre-viewed, ORIGINAL DVD, Ready to Rumble, a comedy film
released in 2000, directed by Brian Robbins, executive produced by his partner, Mike Tollin
& written by Steven Brill, and based on and in cooperation with Turner Broadcasting's
(now defunct) pro wrestling promotion, World Championship Wrestling (WCW). The movie's title
comes from WCW Ring Announcer Michael Buffer's trademarked catchphrase, "Let's get ready
to rumble!".
Robbins is perhaps best known as an actor, playing Eric Mardian on the early 90s sitcom,
Head of the Class, alongside other famous names, such as Robin Givens, the then-wife of
heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson; and Howard Hesseman, the former Dr. Johnny Fever on the sitcom
WKRP in Cincinnati. Presently, Robbins and his partner, Mike Tollin are known for
their work in TV and movies with their production company, Tollins/Robbins Productions. Some
of the properties they have worked with include Nickelodeon's All That, Kenan and Kel &
The Amanda Show as well as Smallville, Birds of Prey, What I Like About You, and One Tree
Hill plus movies Good Burger and Big Fat Liar.
Ready to Rumble follows two sewage workers and WCW wrestling fans, Gordie Boggs
(David Arquette) and Sean Dawkins (Scott Caan, son of famed actor James Caan) who are
attending a WCW live event, watching their favourite wrestler, WCW World Heavyweight Champion
Jimmy King (Oliver Platt) cheated out of the title by Diamond Dallas Page (DDP, playing
himself) and corrupt WCW promoter Titus Sinclair (Joe Pantoliano). Following the match, the
two fans are so outraged at the outcome of the bout that they cause their septic truck to
crash.
Surviving the crash, Gordie believes it was a sign that he and Sean should go on a mission
to make Jimmy King World Champion again. Sean agrees to help, and the next day, the two begin
their quest to return the King to his throne when Gordie asks a friend to help them find out
where the former Champion lives. Their friend succeeds, and the duo travel to find the King,
but instead find King's estranged wife (Caroline Rhea, of Sabrina the Teenage Witch fame) and
later his parents (Kathleen Freeman and Lewis Arquette (David's father)), who tell Gordie and
Sean how King borrowed their mobile home and never returned it. Finally, the two find King's
mobile home, becoming over-excited at finally meeting their idol in person. While talking to
King, he comments that he has given up on wrestling, angering Gordie and Sean, who provoke
King to the point where he attacks them. The boys encourage King to beat them up, until he
finally decides to return to wrestling. Following this revelation, King knocks out Gordie and
Sean with his finishing move.
The next morning, the boys are awakened by Jimmy King dripping beer on them and the trio
begin the trip back to WCW, where Gordie and Sean hide King in a portable toilet while the
wrestlers are interviewed on camera. When DDP mocks Jimmy King, King charges out of the
bathroom and beats him up. Breaking up the fight, Sinclair books a Triple Cage match for the
WCW World Heavyweight Championship plus a $1,000,000 cash prize for the winner. However, if
King loses, he will never wrestle again in wCW.
Now in need of a trainer for his bout agasint Dallas Page, Gordie and Sean try to help
King fins someone, eventually getting retired wrestler Sal Bandini (Martin Landau), who beats
up King before the boys hire him to help train King. Unfortunately, Bandini is attacked and
hospitalized later that night, and Gordie finds out that Nitro Girl Sasha (Charmed's
Rose McGowan), whom he had met earlier and was convinced she liked him, was only using him to
spy on the trio for Titus.
Still down a trainer, the boys need to quickly get someone to help King not only get back
into WCW, but also to regain the Championship! Will they succeed?
Plus, as a treat to WWE fans, John Cena (then an independent wrestler called "The
Prototype") makes a brief appearance in a gym scene.
Look for several WCW wrestlers to appear in the film. See if you can spot them all, and
then check the credits at the end to see if you saw everyone! Here's a "gimme":
"Sugar" Shane Helms (later known in WWE as Gregory Helms and Hurricane Helms was
the stunt double for David Arquette, while the late Chris Kanyon performed the stunts for
Oliver Platt. Kanyon also helped to train Jay Leno for his match at WCW Road Wild 1998, and
was brought out on The Tonight Show.
DVD extras include a blooper reel, where Oliver Platt accidentally struck Randy Savage in
the face during the filming of a fantasy scene. The footage of the incident was shot over
Savage's shoulder, among others.
Other extras include:
Music video of the Twisted Sister song, "We're Not Gonna Take It", performed
by Bif Naked

Behind-the-scenes Up Close with the Nitro Girls and
No Holds Barred (behind the scenes) Commentary by David Arquette, Scott Caan & Ahmet
Zappa, who plays the convenience store clerk and also provides music for the
soundtrack.
Following the release of the movie, WCW decided to generate publicity for the company and
the film by running a storyline in which David Arquette, a legitimate wrestling fan, worked
as a WCW wrestler. Arquette later donated all the money WCW paid him to the families
of deceased professional wrestlers Brian Pillman and Owen Hart and deceased referee Brian
Hildebrand (aka Mark Curtis).
